EXT. GRANITE HILLS COLORADO - DAWN
Camera flies over mountains and heads towards a picturesque
small town that is waking up to a snowstorm, on screen title
says Granite Hills Colorado. As we fly serenely along the
camera altitude lowers and increases speed the closer it gets
to the town. Rooftops of houses become visible and soon we
plummet straight towards one. Just as we are about to hit,
cut immediately to the next scene.
INT. KITCHEN - DAWN
Close-up of toast popping up. We are in the kitchen at LOU
FONTANA's house as he gets ready for work as sheriff of
Granite Hills, Colorado. Lou is older, and nearly ready for
retirement, he lives alone. There are family pictures on the
walls and the place looks like it has had a womanly touch,
but not for a long time. The kitchen is like a museum and
Lou seems to treat it as such, he reverently wipes up crumbs
and folds a towel. He eats and listens to the radio like any
other morning.
RADIO ANNOUNCER
So don't forget to bundle up today,
it's going to be cold out there.
Expect unusually low temperatures
and near white-out conditions for
the next few days, courtesy of La
Nina. I'm Jim Darlington and you're
listening to KXMO, Boulders' own
'Kix FM'. Now heres a little
something to warm up your commute.
(plays Sunny Days by Chicago)
LOU
(turns off radio)
That's just torture Jimmy... warm
up my ass, you're not helping.
Lou looks at one of the pictures on the wall and starts
talking to it.
LOU (CONT'D)
Look at us... freezing through
another winter, it wasn't so bad
when the kids were at home but
now... ah V, it's not fair. We
were gonna have our time in the
sun... somehow we still will... I
promise.
(kisses his fingertips and
touches the picture)
EXT. LOU'S HOUSE - SNOWSTORM
Lou exits front door of his house and stops to pick up a
newspaper before locking up. He brushes off the window of his
snow covered squad car(truck) and drives away.
INT. DINER - SEVERAL CUSTOMERS
Are eating breakfast in a typical diner. SUE the waitress
takes an order, brings it to the kitchen for the cook TED,
the radio is playing Sunny Days. All is normal until the
radio starts to crackle with interference, then a loud
STRANGE TONE comes through very clearly which causes a
disturbance.
SUE
So that's two bacon and eggs, one
basted one over easy, one toast
instead of pancakes and coffee for
both of you.
CUSTOMER ONE
Could I get an orange juice too
please.
SUE
Oj, sure anything else?
CUSTOMER TWO
That's it for me thanks.
SUE
Great, I'll -
RUDE CUSTOMER
-HEY! Can you turn that crap off!
SUE
Didn't your mother teach you any
manners? Ever hear of the word
please?
Sue walks back to the counter where the radio sits and
changes stations but the tone is all across the dial.
SUE (CONT'D)
I'm trying... that's weird.
(turns radio off)
Ted - I think the radio died.
TED
Naw, it's OK. That thing is like
me, hasn't missed a day of work in
fifteen years. Just give it a rest
it'll be fine...
(rings bell)
Order UP!
INT. SQUAD CAR - DRIVING
We are in the front seat with Lou, the wipers are on, it is
snowing heavily outside, he is driving carefully while
squinting to see through the windshield. He picks up the
handset and turns on the radio to call dispatch.
LOU
Unit One 909...
(no response)
Central - this is Unit One, in
service over.
(no response)
Damn.
(adjusts radio control and
tries again)
Becky, this is Lou... do you read?
Over.
(waits for a few seconds
then hangs up the handset,
grips the steering wheel
and drives a bit faster)
EXT. SAW MILL - DAWN
Several men are working outside a saw mill loading lumber
onto trucks. A forklift moves towards us and we see the
operator looking through the window of the cab. His
concentration is broken by something above him, his attention
is drawn upward and he crashes the load into the waiting
truck, another worker gets crushed by the falling lumber.
Others yell at the operator as he stumbles from the forklift,
there is terror on his face as he runs away from the
accident.
INT. A LIVING ROOM - DAWN
There is a 4-5 year old BOY wearing pajamas, he is on the
couch changing channels on the TV and looks very confused and
frustrated. We see that most channels show test patterns or
'please stand by' on the screen, some however are emitting
the ominous STRANGE TONE that we have already heard. MOM is
walking back and forth in the adjacent kitchen making
breakfast.
BOY
Mom... the TV is broken.
MOM (O.S.)
Okay... be right there, give me a
sec Hon.
BOY
Okay.
MOM
(comes out of kitchen wiping
her hands on a towel)
Let me see.
BOY
(hands her the remote)
Here.
MOM
(changes channels, is puzzled)
I'm sure it'll come back on later.
BOY
What if it doesn't?
MOM
(beat)
Of course it will... would you like
to watch a video instead?
BOY
Sponge-Bob!
MOM
(starts back into the kitchen)
Okay... I'm going to finish making
breakfast, you know how to put it
on.
BOY
(gets DVD and puts it in player
while singing)
I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready.
EXT. POLICE STATION - DAWN
The Granite Hills police station, it is a small detachment
consisting of no more than six officers and support staff. We
see Lou pull up in front, get out of his vehicle and walk
towards the entrance, it is still snowing.
INT. POLICE STATION - RECEPTION
At the dispatch desk sits BECKY JESSUP, she adjusts the
police radio dials while listening closely. A deputy named
CARL FISCHER is drinking coffee and hovering close by, trying
to make small talk with her. There are a couple more staff
members - BAKER and WEISS in the background who are preparing
for another day, one is cleaning a gun while the other does
paperwork.
CARL
Man is it blowing out there... did
you have any trouble this morning?
BECKY
No... did you?
CARL
Uh no... I well, thought you
might... I mean with all the snow
like a ride in tomorrow.
BECKY
(trying to concentrate and
getting annoyed)
You've seen what I drive... 4x4...
a ladder to get in it, remember?
CARL
Yeah -
BAKER
(looks up from cleaning his gun
and bats eyelashes at Carl)
- You can give me a ride in
tomorrow.
CARL
Can I get you a coffee?
BECKY
Got some... thanks.
BAKER
(waves a cup)
You can get me one.
CARL
(ignores Baker)
Oh yeah - sure is nice to have
something to warm your hands up
with... coffee I mean.
WEISS
(looks up from his paperwork,
to Carl)
Hey Fish... I know why you're still
single.
CARL
Because I'm particular.
BECKY
(teases, to Carl)
Sure... Hey, can you do me a
favour?
CARL
(seems hopeful)
Sure! What did you have in mind?
BECKY
(flatly)
Can you get a walkie? I need you
to do a radio check... I'm not
getting anything here.
CARL
On it.
(leaves)
LOU
(enters the office)
Good morning.
BECKY
There you are... hey is your radio
okay? I didn't hear you check
in...
LOU
That's what's wrong. I wondered
when you didn't acknowledge,
thought you stepped away for a
minute.
BECKY
I'm not getting anything else
either.
CARL
(comes back with walkie-talkie)
Radio check... radio check
(makes an adjustment)
Radio check... try turning down the
squelch.
BECKY
Sure thing Marconi.
Becky adjusts the radio, suddenly the same mysterious tone as
before comes through the speaker.
LOU
What the hell! Sounds like the
military are playing games. Becky,
go to 114 point 7.
BECKY
Got it...
(tone is still there)
Same thing.
CARL
There's nothing wrong with the
radios... this is just great.
LOU
(pulls out his cell phone and
tries calling, gets 'your call
cannot be completed as dialed')
What about yours?
BECKY
(gets phone from purse and
tries with same results)
Nothing... Lou? - What do you think
this is?
LOU
I don't know, but we're going to
find out...
Lou picks up a land line phone, it appears to be working he
hands it to Becky.
LOU (CONT'D)
Here... can you call Boulder and
find out if they know something
about this?
EXT. DIRT ROAD - DAWN
A mail truck drives down the road and stops at a mailbox.
The MAILMAN gets out and shoves some letters in it, puts up
the flag and walks back to his truck. His gaze is drawn
upwards and he stops dead in his tracks, he does not seem
frightened however. Surprisingly he begins to smile
beatifically, removes his hat and crosses his chest.
MAILMAN
Sweet Jesus...
INT. POLICE STATION - RECEPTION
Becky is on the phone talking to the Boulder office of the
police. Lou stands nearby flipping through some paperwork as
he waits for her to finish.
BECKY
... I hope it's just an exercise
too... No cell phones either that
must be part of it... I hear you...
we were all wondering... alright
Steve, you too... thanks.
LOU
They have no idea do they?
BECKY
Doesn't sound like it... get this,
they said that military convoys had
been going through town since three
this morning. No word from the Feds
they haven't been told anything
about why the radio is out or when
it's coming back.
LOU
What? Why the hell didn't we get
notified? I knew it, those lunatics
had to be involved somehow. This is
bull shit, we're out of the loop...
that doesn't happen when they have
a drill... if that's what this is.
BECKY
Lou, I have a bad feeling about
this... I swear Boulder is in panic
mode, they think something's up.
Steve wasn't himself, sounded...
scared.
CARL
(is now on the phone at his
desk, he has a puzzled look on
his face as he hangs up)
We'll have someone come by to take
a look as soon as possible Mr.
Anderson... I know - as soon as we
can, just try and calm down okay?
Alright, bye.
LOU
What's happening?
CARL
Will Anderson at the mill...
something about an accident, the
rest didn't make any sense.
BECKY
How?
CARL
He said the moon fell... go look
it's there... No idea what he was
talking about, he was losing it.
The phone rings and Carl answers, Lou is paying attention to
the conversation.
CARL (CONT'D)
Granite Hills PD -- Okay... right,
that the best thing you could do at
this point... Ridge Road, yeah...
uh huh... we'll get someone
heading that way... as soon as
possible... bye.
BECKY
What is it now, somebody else see
the moon?
CARL
Nope... mail truck on the side of
the road... guy found it said the
motor was running and he's worried
about the mailman... thought maybe
something happened to him. I'm
heading up to the mill and go see
what's up, maybe somebody else
check out the mailman... If I'm not
back in an hour... shit, what the
hell are we supposed to do without
the radio.
LOU
We do what we have to... just like
any other day. I want you to look
alive out there, something's going
down. Could be military drills...
But until we find out... if you see
those goons, stay the hell out of
their way. The land lines still
work so call as soon as you find
out what's going on up there... I
want to get to the bottom of this.
CARL
Hey Lou.
LOU
What?
CARL
Do you have any quarters?
(reaches into pants pocket)
Just kidding.
(pulls out his keys and gives
them a playful shake as he
exits)
LOU
Becky, you and Weiss hold down the
fort, I have to go look in on
somebody. Baker, I need you to get
out there and check out a mail
truck on-
BAKER
-Ridge Road... on my way chief.
(grabs his coat and hurries out
of the station)
BECKY
Lou... call in when you can. I
don't want to wait... Just be
careful okay?
LOU
I'll let you know soon as I find
out something.
(turns to leave but stops)
Don't worry... I'll be careful.
(smiles at Becky, winks and
exits)
INT. OVAL OFFICE - A MEETING
PRESIDENT HART is with some military officials and staff
members, he reads one of the several documents on the desk
in front of him and then slams it down onto the pile. One of
the military men present is GENERAL RUSHTON, he is a large
imposing figure with a crew cut and full compliment of medals
on his chest. On closer inspection we cannot help but see a
pin among the medals, it is Masonic symbol.
GENERAL RUSHTON
This is it Mr. President, we can't
keep it hidden any more... it's
over.
PRESIDENT
Damn it Rushton! Why didn't your
people tell us this was coming!
GENERAL RUSHTON
What good would it have done? Trust
me... everyone was much better off
not knowing.
PRESIDENT
We would have had time-
GENERAL RUSHTON
-No... we wouldn't. Not against
this, that would be impossible...
it's too big, you don't understand.
PRESIDENT
(takes an authoritative tone
and stance)
I want to... why don't you fill me
in then.
GENERAL RUSHTON
They operate on a different time
scale than we do, we come and go
while they remain. We have kept the
knowledge hidden... there has been
no choice all along.
PRESIDENT
God-damn! There's always a
choice... We can't lay down and
die! I'm the President of the
United States damn it! I say we
have a choice-
GENERAL RUSHTON
-We have to move to a secure
location immediately.
PRESIDENT
Is that it? Wait it out in a hole?
GENERAL RUSHTON
(suddenly the General turns to
the others in the room, his
demeanor changes as he snarls)
Leave us!
The staffers jump at his command and quickly file out the
door, Rushton slams it shut behind them.
GENERAL RUSHTON (CONT'D)
There is a good chance of survival,
we have been given the opportunity
to remain on after the cleansing...
as the Architects have promised.
PRESIDENT
You're a part of this... you son of
a bitch!
In a blur of movement, Rushton grabs the President and slams
him up against the wall.
GENERAL RUSHTON
Listen you little worm, it's time
you realized who is working for who
here... Know that as of this moment
you are on notice, deviate in any
way from my orders and... just
don't.
(lets him down from wall)
PRESIDENT
(clearly shaken, tries to
regain composure)
I only want what's best...
considering the circumstances.
GENERAL RUSHTON
What you want has no bearing on
what is happening... or did we not
make ourselves clear enough for
you?
PRESIDENT
(turns towards the window and
gestures)
We have to tell them... something.
GENERAL RUSHTON
You are... we have a speech
prepared that you'll deliver in
twenty minutes.
PRESIDENT
What about my family, where are
they?
GENERAL RUSHTON
In transit and will meet you, we
have to go... now.
On cue, four large MIB march into the office and escort the
President and General down the hallway to an elevator which
takes them below the White House. There is a private train
waiting to take them to an underground bunker. A Marine
salutes as he stands beside the open door of the train, we
see the entourage enter, the door close and the train pull
away.
EXT. SAW MILL - DAY SNOWING
Carl drives through the gates of the mill. There are
vehicles on the road that appear to have been abandoned, the
driver doors are left open on some of them. We then see what
he sees as he drives slowly past several of the vehicles and
arrives at the accident scene, there is no-one around. A
full shot of the yard shows Carl stop the car and get out, he
looks around and listens, there is no noise at all as he
starts toward the office.
CARL
Hello! - Anybody here?
There is a sudden noise inside the mill office, it is quite a
jolt against the silence which immediately returns. Carl
draws his sidearm and moves to investigate.
CARL (CONT'D)
This is Officer Fischer... Granite
Hills PD... Identify yourself...
I'm responding to a call... you
need to show yourself.
(pushes open door to office)
Hello... Will? Will Anderson...
INT. MILL OFFICE - DAY
Carl enters and creeps through the office area ready for
anything, he gets close to a desk and sees that underneath is
a terrified WILL ANDERSON hiding from something, Carl pulls
away a chair to get to him.
CARL
Hey, you alright?
(shakes him a bit)
Police... what happened here? Come
on, snap out of it... hey.
Will is terrified, he is barley able to speak and only does
so after coming out of his state with a bit more coaxing from
Carl.
WILL ANDERSON
I... I.... I s s saw it. Took them
all... they disappeared... they lit
up...
CARL
What do you mean they disappeared?
What did you see man!
WILL ANDERSON
I... I can't. It's not real... it's
not... real.
Carl helps Will out from under the desk to his feet, when we
hear the sounds of vehicles coming into the mill yard
outside. Carl moves to an office window to look and we see
military trucks and heavily armed troops get out of them.
CARL
(backs away from window and
turns to Will)
Something tells me these guys are
gonna want to talk to you.
EXT. SAW MILL OFFICES - DAY SNOWING
We see a cohort of soldiers rush towards the building and
entrance of the office, it appears they know that some-one is
inside. They bound up the stairs and kick the door open.
INT. SAW MILL OFFICES - DAY
Carl and Will jump as the door bursts open and soldiers come
into the office, they scream obscenities and point weapons at
them. The squad leader enters, both Carl and Will have their
hands up. He briefly sizes the two of them up, then suddenly
draws a huge pistol and shoots Will Anderson in the head.
Carl makes a move towards the soldiers and is hit in the face
with a rifle butt and blacks out.
INT. CHURCH - BACKROOM
We are in the backroom of a church with long time resident of
Granite Hills, FATHER PATRICK MAHONEY. He has provided crisis
support and spiritual guidance for many in the community,
including Sheriff Lou Fontana; there is evidence of this from
the pictures, awards and plaques that adorn the walls. He
sits alone at a table, there is a glass and unopened bottle
of whisky on it. He contemplates his surroundings for a
moment, then somberly removes his collar and places it on the
table beside the glass.
INT. POLICE STATION - DAY
We see Becky and Weiss in the office. They are working at
their desks when we hear the familiar sound of military
vehicles approaching, this time however there is a different
cadence to the motors as they change gears. Becky and Weiss
both get up and start towards the door to look, before they
get there the door is opened by a SOLDIER, he is very young
and looks quite frightened.
BECKY
What can I do for you soldier?
WEISS
I wanna know what's going on out
there... why the hell is the radio
out?
SOLDIER
Ya'll better hide... it's... it's
here. I didn't believe it, thought
they was full of it. Quick we
gotta hide!
We hear a crackling sound outside and the interior of the
office is lit up by flashes of light, there are shouts and
screams accompanied by bursts of gunfire.
Becky, Weiss and the Soldier duck as the windows shatter and
the station office is raked by bullets, the flashes of light
build to a crescendo and then stop, leaving only the sound of
sparks from broken lights and papers fluttering to the floor.
